Every Saturday since mid-July a team of leaders from Habitat for Humanity has been working side by side with weekly volunteers doing rehab on a 100+ year old home in Pittston, PA. Lord willing, my friend Shawn, his wife and two children will move into that home next summer.
I have been blessed to be part of the volunteer team on some of those Saturdays and I can say with distinction that I am one of the "senior" members of the volunteer team. Translated, 7 hours of physical work on a Saturday requires three days of Advil for recovery. I would not trade the pain for a "bag full of 20's"; this is truly a labor of love as I am a small part of the transformation of this "house" to what will be a "home" by next July.
Another beautiful aspect of this service project is observing the different volunteer teams that show up week after week. These teams come from every corner of the community, college students, youth sports teams, civic groups and business organizations. If this were not impressive enough, most of these volunteer groups do not have a personal connection to the family that will eventually move into the home. To the best of my knowledge, these folks are coming out on a Saturday morning for the purpose of helping a family that they do not even know...please let that sink in. It blows my mind.
Did I mention lunch? Every week at around 11:30 someone shows up and feeds us lunch. I have no idea who these people are, they are different each week, but you can set your clock by their faithfulness. Everybody gets fed!
So how about you, are you looking for an opportunity to serve?
Too old to swing a hammer? Grab a broom.
No experience in construction? The team leaders provide instruction and encouragement, I am doing things that I never thought that I could do.
Can't dedicate 7 hours? Provide the lunch.
Homebound or disabled? Find a local Habitat project and pray for their progress and safety each Saturday morning.
Service is beautiful, service blesses the servant, service is simple!
Service is loving one another, John 13:35 "by this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another".
What a great story, and what a wonderful way of putting our spiritual concern into practical action! Hope to hear more about how this project is going as the work progresses!
Absolutely beautiful!!!

Amen!! What a wonderful and moving story about “The Incredible Power of Simple Service”.
Once again, the author has melted my cold, cold, heart and reduced me to a puddle of tears. I wonder if he’s aware of the current shortage of paper products, such as tissues?
